We have been going to the Polka Theatre for many many years now (in fact, I used to go there with school as a child) and over the years, we have enjoyed many productions – starting off with the shows for toddlers and wee ones and then progressing to more grown up productions “upstairs”. We were invited to come along an see Babe, The Sheep-Pig. I confess, my expectations where not terribly high for this. The movie or the same name, is not too exciting for me.
But my, how we were proved wrong. The show was absolutely brilliant.
If you are unfamiliar with the film or story – Babe, is the story of a young pig who fancies itself a sheep herder. Against all odds, he succeeds in managing sheep through kindness, thoughtfulness and bravery. A heartwarming story full of fun and adventure.
The Polka Theatre’s stage production is simply marvelous. With a clever use of a relatively small stage, fabulous costumes (see the video below for the farmer and his wife), the right sort of humour and imagination and fantastic music. In fact, I think it was the music that really “did it” for us. The four us sat enthralled throughout the whole show. No fidgeting. No getting bored. Just wonder and excitement. There are two or three “scary moments”. So if your child is a bit sensitive, to prepare the for this (some thieves, a wolf and a bad dream), but they are brief, add to the excitement and are well managed.
We all loved it. And though we have every faith in Polka Theatre productions, this was unexpectedly brilliant. A total MUST SEE for everyone this Christmas season.

A big thank you to the Polka Theatre team for inviting us along to see the show!
