The Moomins is something that I remember from MY childhood. And with all the best things from your own childhood, you (I?) are often keen for your own kids to experience it and enjoy it. So, I am so pleased that the Moomins seemed to be having a come back – first there have been theatre plays last Summer and now there is a full feature length MOVIE!: Moomins on the Riviera. My kids were keen to watch it straight away (and thanks to this bundle from the PR company, we settled into a rather cozy MOVIE NIGHT with some delicious treats all the way from Sweden and Norway! Here is a bit of Moomin Trivia – the author Tove Jansson was Finnish and the Moomins were first published in Sweden!).
Anyway I digress.
Synopsis. The Moomins decide to go on a little holiday to the French Riviera. They check into a grand hotel, where fellow guests believe them to be an eccentric rich family. An eccentric they are. They have no idea, what to do with the bath (they think it is a swimming pool), they don’t know how things work in the restaurant and they order everything on the sun. They meet strange and interesting people and Snork Maiden accidently wins millions at the roulette table and attracts dubious characters that are after her money……
The Moomins are their classic charming and innocent selves and get into a number of spots of bother because of it. But will there be a happy ending? Will Snork Maiden fall for the wrong guy? How will they pay their bills? And why did they get in trouble with the police? You will have to watch it to find out.
The film is refreshingly “old fashioned”. The animation is very much “2D” and transports you back in time, make it feel as if the old comic books have come to life. This doesn’t detract from a great film that the children very much enjoyed and want to watch again!
