The Polka Theatre is a theatre that I have been visiting for years – literally – I remember going there as a child myself! So when my two (now 6 and 4 yrs olds) came along, I was desperate to take them as soon as they were old enough. Luckily for me (and you!), the Polka Theatre is a wonderfully welcoming place – perfromances for little ones (downstairs – hurry, they always sell out quickly) a welcoming play area with old rocking horses, a dress up box and a reading and drawing nook – open all day and welcomed to everyone and of course many brilliant children’s plays, performed in its main auditorium. We had the pleasure of coming along to their performance of Midsummer Moomins. If you are familiar with the lovable characters from The Moomins or not, this play is enjoyable for all the family. No prior knowledge of the stories and book required – but I promise you, once you have watched the play, you will head out and BUY some of the Moomin Books!!!
The Story: It is Midsummer and the Moomin Children and Little My are allowed to sleep in the garden as a special treat.. but before we know it a storm is brewing, a BIG storm… a big storm tat ends up flooding the mooming house. The Moomin family take it all in good humour (especially once the breakfast things are salvaged) and upon rescuing Misabel from a float embark on a Midsummer Madness adventure. What will happen to the family? Will the Moomin children be ok? What is Misabel up to? You will have to come and see!
The show is a perfromed with the help of puppets and a talented cast of four. The music is enchanting and the characters endearing and funny. If you are not familiar with the Moomin stories, you quickly get a sense about what each character is about (Dad always thinks about his food, Misabel, well likes to be misrable, Little My is cheeky all the way). There is excitement (the big flood) and drama (the mean policeman), but on the whole no “scary bits” if you are taking younger or sensitive children.
