Well you know me and movie reviews – bang on trend – not… Ice Age 4 has been out since the Summer here in the UK and only now have the kids and I finally gone to see it. So our Ice Age 4 review is a tad late.. but you may be considering getting it on DVD (don’t bother).

Summary of story:
The greedy and stupid squirrel tries to bury its acorn…. as it does so, he accidentally causes the Continental Drift. Manny, Diego and Sid get separated from their herd and embark on an ice berg boat adventure. They meet some mean pirates, escape capture and land on an island. How are they going to get back to the herd? In the meantime, Peaches and Ellie face their own problems as the continents continue to shift and their habitat is pushed out to sea. Will there be a happy end?
What did we think? Well, my almost 5yrs old loved it (of course, he loves ALL movies we take him to). He did find it a bit scary. My 3yrs old didn’t like the “pirate” and got very fidgety towards the end. It was a tad long for them I think. Yes, the animation is good, yes the continental rift caused by a greedy squirrel is quirky and yes it was exciting.
I spotted my kids holding hands at one point. Thought that was cute!
Was the story any good? Not really, all the clever bits are “way above the kids heads” (and probably most 10year old’s heads too). The rest of the story is a bit naff.
But it is a cartoon and kids like cartoons.
If your child is young and sensitive, then don’t take them (the pirate really is very horrid), if they like excitement and are used to Disney, then do. If you want a good story, don’t.
Watch the Ice Age 4 Trailer for yourself:
Would my husband have enjoyed it? Not particularly, but he tolerates cartoons.
Did my friend’s kids enjoy it? The 5yrs olds did, the 3yrs olds either fidgeted, cried or were scared by the Pirate Monkey.
Likeability of characters – 6/ 10 (personally I only liked Diego and Peaches’ little friend)
General story line – 6/10 (like the concept, but the overall story naff and predictable)
The Ending – 7/10 (you did need a happy ending, esp when in the cinema with little ones)
The only reason the movie gets 6s and 7s is because we like cartoons.
