Well, I haven’t been to a musical in a long time. I used to love going to musicals and then somehow went off them. They seemed a little, well cheesy or too orchestrated. Or maybe I had just seen too many. I don’t know. But when a friend asked whether I wanted to come see 9 to 5 “you know the one with Dolly Parton” in it, I thought, well why not give it a go? Especially since it was showing at my local theatre, which often does great West End shows that go on tour. So I thought I would share this 9 to 5 musical review with you.
I usually judge a show (or book or film) by how it leaves me feeling at the end of it (a few days later, I often feel differently about it). And with 9 to 5, I felt like I had had a good night’s entertainment and that every penny of my ticket had been worth it.
- Directed and choreographed by Jeff Calhoun
- Cast Amy Lennox, Jackie Clunes, Natalie Casey, Ben Richards plays, Dolly Parton via video projection
- 2009 Broadway production with new songs by Dolly Parton
9 to 5 was well produce, the cast was fabulous (and could actually sing) and the stage scenery was great and well done.
The Story: Set in the late 70s, this is the story of 3 women working in a “traditional” male environment. Each is treated in a sexist and patronising manner by the company boss. The first he flirts with in salacious manner, the second he overlooks for promotion (though she is clearly qualified for the job) and the third he humiliates in front of the office. To cut a medium story short, the 3 women “snap” and end up kidnapping the boss and whilst holding him hostage discover his embezzlements and turn the company now round. But will they get away with it? Will there be a happy end? You will have to watch it for yourself.

As mentioned, I loved the cast, the female leads were brilliant in their roles. Dolly Parton herself narrates the whole musical through pre recorded fillms, which fit perfectly with the show. The setting was well done.
So… my overall ratings:
Would my husband like this musical? Probably not, but then he isn’t the musical type!
Did my friend like this film? All 3 friends that came along enjoyed it very much. It left you feeling happy and upbeat. Hooray for the 80s.
Likeability of characters – 9/ 10 (all the characters were well cast and likeable, and the hateful boss was appealingly hateful)
General story line – 8/10 (well,it is a bit preposterous but has a good fit with the whole “musical vibe”)
The Ending – 8/10 (the ending as predictable, but in a good, it could be “no other way” way)
Music – 8/10 (very Dolly Parton and if you like 80s music and the classic “9 to 5” song then you will like this!)
I give this musical a definite “feel good thumbs up” rating.
