We had the pleasure of being invited along to see the Peter Pan production at the Polka Theatre (Wimbledon, UK) this weekend. The kids and I LOVE going to the theatre (and cinema), so we were very excited to see this production. As big fans of the Polka Theatre, our expectations were set high. And we were not disappointed!!
The Polka Theatre is well known it’s “traditional” theatre for kids – in the Summer we were totally enchanted by Skitterbang Island – an Opera for kids – a great example of how the Polka Theatre tries to engage even the youngest among us the world of theatre and music from an early age. Willing to take risks and put on some fantastic shows. Peter Pan is yet another one of their great plays and is the perfect show to take your kids to this Christmas.
Officially, it is for 6yrs+ , but we went to one of the extended family showings – when all age groups are welcomed. It was packed. And though, there are indeed “scary and spooky” elements, judging by the audience, the scary and spooky where just “right” to make it a thrilling and exciting adventure. My children are both used to the fact “that if you wait”, there is usually a good ending. It helps that they are familiar with the Peter Pan story (though they didn’t know it inside out). So the more “scary parts” (in essence the pirates and the somewhat spooky croc), where easy for them to manage. In fact, the pirates quickly turn from scary to a “figures of fun”, as Peter Pan and the gang deftly trick and beat them! And my 5yrs old daughter, loved the creative design of the croc and complained that he didn’t feature more!!
As usual, the production was creative (oh how we loved the Tinkerbell puppet), the characters had modern elements – a leather jacket sporting Peter pan and pin suited pirates – but in a way, that suited the feel of the play, rather than distract or confuse.
A show not to be missed this Christmas!
