Oooh we are GREAT fans of Julia Donaldson and we are GREAT fans of Stick Man. Such a fun fun book. Full of classic Julia Donaldson rhymes and wonderful Alex Scheffler artwork. It has inspired many a Stick Man Craft session in our house! So when the wonderful PR behind the Stick Man Theatre play invited us along to their fantastic show, I knew we HAD to go. I decided to take just the girl (almost 5), as a special one on one birthday treat! And what a treat it was.
Synopsis – for those not familiar with the book – Stick Man follows the story of, well, Stick Man, a little stick like creature, who goes out for a little jog one day… and then gets mistaken for an ordinary stick. A dog plays throw and catch, a girl uses it for pooh sticks, a swan builds a nest and Stick Man drifts further and further away from home. He ends up on a heap of fire wood. Oh dear. What will happen? Will he be saved???
I was super curious how they would translate a 10-15min “read” into a 50min play and how they would represent the characters. Well, I can say, I was enchanted and impressed and awed. Both the girl and I were mesmerized, by the wonderful song, acting and stage settings.. from pom pom dangling umbrellas, to beach ball (audience participation) and great music, we simply LOVED every minute of it. Cleverly done, by a team of 3.
They had the audience chuckling, shouting, cheering and clapping – always a good sign. Lost of younger children too (2yrs+??), so a great family show, especially in the run to Christmas. I would most definitely put it on my “must see list”.
Wonderful and totally a MUST SEE.
