The Energy Show, where Theatre meets Science. What more can you want? A great production by the Science Museum exploring the different types of Energy (e.g. magnetic, kinetic, sound… etc). Aimed at 7yrs+ this is a production that can be enjoyed by all the family. Our youngest was a little scared (by the noise, mummy – read more about her experience here), but enjoyed it overall.
- Officially for 7yrs+
- Run time, approximately 1 hour, no interval
Phil and Annabel are two science students that are tasked to create a science presentation in order to pass their course. They have one hour to do it in and prepare. Annabel is VERY organised. Phil is very disorganised. Together they make a perfect team. They are assited by Bernhard the lab assistant and I-nstein – a virtual Einstein who guides them through the experiments.
The play is full of humour (Phil likes to be silly and dangerous things), a little romance (Annabel and Bernhard) and lots of science made accessible and easy (by a project of I-nstein onto a huge IMAX cinema screen. I love the illustrations used on this screen, loved the humour of the play (perfect for kids) and of course all the experiments.
The potential for learning is huge. In our case, it was more about introducing science and science terms to the kids, as well as some Chemistry. Without a doubt this was way over their heads, but it has awakened an interest to ask questions… and I can see lots of opportunity for further discussion at home (e.g. I often have little electric shocks from friction energy.. I can now point this out to the kids and discuss it with them). It is of course “more entertaining” than a lesson in science – well it wouldn’t be a fun SHOW otherwise, would it, but a lecture. But I can see this complimenting any school work your child may currently be doing. A HUGE thumbs up from us for sure.

Would my husband have enjoyed it? Yes! I think he would have loved it.
Did the kids at the theatre enjoy it? The 5.5yrs old loved it, though he didn’t enjoy it all. The 3.5yrs old was a little frightened by the bangs, but stayed throughout the show…
Likeability of characters – 9/ 10 (fun characters)
General story line – 9/10 (good contrast between the two main students)
The Ending – 9/10 (predictable, but then the show wasn’t about the ending!)
Overall – brilliant concept of combining theatre with science. Loved it all. Read what others thought of it.
