We are HUGE Julia Donaldson Fans here and have been to a number of her book’s plays already – in particularly Stickman and What The Ladybird Heard. This Summer theatre’s is packed full of the Julia Donaldson’s brilliant books. Samp Theatre is showing the fabulous “Tiddler & Other Terrific Stories” play. Some of our favourite Julia Donaldson stories brought together in ONE fantastic stage show for kids (recommended age 3yrs+).
I was curious to see how they would bring all the 4 books together – after all, Stickman and What The Ladybird Heard were “full plays in their own right”. Would they rush through each book? Would it be over too quickly? Or would it be too long as there are s many elements to incorporate?
Of course not. It was just perfect! In some ways having the 4 stories was great.. as the adaptations were fairly short and moved at a fast paste. Perfect for little people and short(er) attention spans. My 5yrs old was engrossed and I love watching my 7yrs old giggle away – is at that magical age, where he is starting to grow up (and wants to do cool things like the Star Wars Secret cinema) and yet is young enough to secretly REALLY enjoy this play. He wouldn’t admit it of course, but I think he enjoyed it more than his younger sister!
I am a big fan of Scamp Theatre anyway and have always enjoyed ingenuity of their stage adaptations. Full of creativity, puppetry, cleverness and fun. I love how they challenge the kids to think creatively (a scarf becomes a snake, a green handbag a frog) and be prepared for some great music and some fun surprises throughout the whole of the show.
I love how different all the stories were (I DO LOVE a Squash and a Squeeze) in a way that seemed totally obvious (of course THAT is how you do it), but that I so could not imagine before hand!
Both my 5 and 7yrs old were enraptured and couldn’t take their eyes off the stage. We could have easily stayed there and watch the play ALL OVER AGAIN. Such a wonderful way to bring the arts to life to our new generation of theatre go-ers. I feel lucky to live here in the UK, with such talented theatre production companies. Your must see this Summer!
